Russian Dining Etiquette: What Every Visitor Should Know

✍️ Admin ⏱️ 5 min read 📅 6 July 2026 👁️ 3 views

The Russian table is a place of warmth, generosity and ritual. Understanding a few key customs will help you participate fully and avoid any inadvertent offence.

The toast (тост) is central to any celebratory Russian meal. The first toast is almost always to the host, the occasion, or the guests of honour. Do not drink before the first toast — it is considered rude. Subsequent toasts flow freely and creatively. If you do not drink alcohol, covering your glass with your hand is a universally understood and respected signal.

Bread is sacred at the Russian table — never place it face-down, and do not waste it. If you are offered food and decline, expect gentle persistence: a second or third offer is normal and reflects genuine hospitality rather than pressure. The correct response to being served is simply to take a small portion at first; you can always accept more.
